PNTMC involvement with huts

At the EGM held on the 8th March 2012, the meeting voted unanimously that the Club would adopt two hut management proposals that DOC were offering.

Consequently, the Club has a direct involvement with the running and upkeep of three huts in the Ruahines.  PNTMC has been busy during 2012 visiting all the huts of the Ruahines.

Background to the decision

Current funding levels mean that DOC will not be maintaining up to 50% of back country huts in the Ruahines in the near future.   Andrew Mercer (Programme Manager Visitor Assets, Manawatu Rangitikei Area Office of DOC) has approached PNTMC committee in the hope that the club would agree to take on management of one or more huts.

Ngamoko and Mid-Pohangina are two huts that DOC will not be maintaining and is seeking community input to manage them.   Rangiwahia is a hut that DOC will continue to maintain but would like to have PNTMC as a community partner to work with because of the Club's historical association with this hut.

The links detail the implications to the Club of these two proposals. Mid Pohangina & Ngamoko Huts focuses on PNTMC taking on the management of Ngamoko and Mid-Pohangina huts. Rangiwahia Hut focuses on PNTMC working in partnership with DOC who will continue to manage Rangiwahia Hut.

These proposals represent a significant commitment for the club.  Information about the state of these huts and any suggestions about their upkeep and willingness to volunteer would be greatly appreciated.  Donations are especially welcome.  Note that the Club is an officially recognised charity for the tax deduction of gifts.
