Kime Hut: Tararua Ranges

Outlook: In basin above the bush line at about 1400m.  A haven from the elements above the bushline.
Number of Bunks: Four large sleeping platforms with mattresses for about 20.

Cooking Facilities: Stainless work bench in separate kitchen area and water from outside tank.

Useful info: Built by Joe Gibbs c1930 of Field Hut fame and named after a founder of Tararua TC.(materials carried up by horse!).  Replaced by Vosseler Hut 25 minutes to north c1959, then rebuilt on current (original) site 1978. Buffeted by westerly gales.  Can be easily missed in whiteout conditions. Part of the classic southern crossing route. Sturdy but generally cold (no heating). About 2 to 3 hours from Field Hut depending on conditions and 45 minutes to Mt Hector. Allow 3 hours or so to Alpha Hut, but very dependent on conditions.
